Hi @iRobinPro, I am your logtime follower and I like the way you explain things of complete Apple ecosystem. Great job.
I am a windows user and planning to enter into Mac OS world to experience ARM and unified memory. My workflow involves heavy web browsing in at least 4 browsers, 1 will have 10 tabs for my main work and rest 3 will have multiple tabs for reading, taking notes, to read in near future etc…and OneNote, excel and Citrix workspace (primary work)… I am thinking of going for base M2 pro, 512gb ssd(my workflow is enough for this) and confused between 16 gb or 32 gb unified RAM…
I don’t mind in paying up extra for 32 gigs, in my windows environment (8 gig system) usually RAM is more than 80% utilized and it commits 4 gb in virtual memory… Could you please help me in choosing 16 or 32 gigs as macOS unified memory looks ultra advanced and we can’t compare memory utilization bw Mac and windows….It will be useful if you can throw some light on it and OS caching.
Vanakkam bro. Mac computers with M1 or M2 processors can handle more than the work load you have mentioned It goes through breeze with so much tabs that chrome can handle without issues. only thing is, when we install more extensions, that RAM space gets occupied. Apps we use will decide how much RAM is needed.
But Mac Swap space is very well managed where even with 8GB RAM it runs smooth for 4K video editing tasks.
My suggestion is, if you are planning for long term usage, and budget allows then considering 16GB RAM or 32GB RAM with 1TB Storage drive will be good choice. Consider taking applecare+ with it to get 3 years peace of mind as its an expensive purchase.
One more thing, regarding the RAM memory, if you are going to use virtualisation softwares, then higher the RAM is always good to have in the system. 16GB is sufficient for most people work loads. But again, it depends on your budget selection after calculating 1TB SSD upgrade and applecare+.
Do let me know if you have any further questions bro. have a good day.
Thanks Bro, so can I go for M2 chip with 24gb RAM and 1 TB with apple care+ for my workflows which involves 5 browsers (1 browser without any extension thinking of Safari and 10 active tabs all the time, remaining browsers I plan to use suspenders if the system slows or even I can close 1 or 2 of them and reopen all the tabs again) office 365, a security camera(only used for glancing 2 or 3 times in a day), Spotify, YT music, WhatsApp, telegram always in background and Citrix workspace engine for my primary work( this occupies max 500mb in Ram or lower)…I have verified mostly all apps are ARM architecture optimized.
Occasionally (1 or 2 times a month) I might use light video editor for editing profanity in movies, but I could close the 4 other browsers while doing this basic editing and save I can wait as I will be only doing it during my week off.
Also planning to invest in a good 4K monitor…Have shortlisted the LG 27 suggested by you and dell U2723qe….If I turnoff HDR then the resolution and scaling for sharp and good?
Apart from this I don’t see any scale up in my workflow for next 4 years in my current assignments. Sorry for long question, as I am transitioning from windows little confused to select the Mac mini.
Yes bro. that should be perfect fit. I havent used citrix workspace so far, but it does handle other resource intensive tasks very well. you will be surprised with the overall performance for sure after using it.
as its an expensive purchase, if possible do experience macbook base model once at apple showroom. try opening some good number of tabs with different websites and see how it handles.
For your work I think it will be overkill. but still for long term it will be best.
HDR does affect mac color calibration. so I kept mine OFF as suggested in my LG monitor review video.
This is the monitor I have,
Dell seems to have similar spec with higher price range. you can choose based on your budget bro.
