hi bro, with airpods there are several accessibility settings to adjust for our call quality but not for audio messages. if you havent recently adjusted any of them, then consider checking the audio message quality by sending it in iMessage app to any other iPhone user.
So you can see the difference in audio quality. whatsapp does compresses the audio message we send, but just to check if airpods audio has any difference between these two platforms. also you can try recording a voice message in voice memo app and playback to check the difference too.
mostly airpods has better bass audio in general. we cannot manually control them. but just check this comparison of audio difference and see.

In voice memo recording and WhatsApp voice message the voice quality is same
The bass is high, voice sounds with deeper bass
so its the default audio quality maintained with our voice it seems. if its one app specific issue, then we would have noticed the difference. audio is generally processed by the system based on the mic we are using. airpods recent models are delivering increased bass and treble value it seems.
When you listen the same audio in iPhone speaker, noticing any difference?
