Impact of Scaling 4K to 2K on macOS: Performance and Quality for Photo and Video Editing

Hi, brother,

I’m planning to buy a Mac Mini M4 along with either the LG 27UP850-W or the MSI Modern MD271UL monitor, as both are within my budget. However, I’ve seen on YouTube and read in some articles that when using a 27-inch 4K monitor with macOS, you often need to scale the resolution to “2K” (2560x1440) because the UI and text otherwise appear too small.

My question is, if I scale 4K to 2K, will it affect performance, particularly for photo and video editing? Also, if I scale the resolution this way, how will it impact the quality of images and videos? Will they still display at 4K quality, or will there be a noticeable downgrade?

I noticed that in your video, you didn’t discuss this topic, so I’d really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance!

hi bro, Yes I havent included that in the video, But for photo editors and video editors they normally use spyder type of color calibration tool to make it fit for their editing setup. for color accuracy.

about the scaling, for 27 inch monitor with 4K it is necessary to change the resolution to 2K in order to see the texts in normal size. Its not an issue with editing workflow. but if its 32 inch or higher size monitors, then we will be able to use 4K resolution.

if you are planning to go with editing purposes, then do consider checking Benq monitor bro. they have good panels and color accuracy with little settings change. but again, if you have any calibration tool, you can use that to optimise it better bro.

Thanks bro
